It would be nice to have a large kitchen island that can give us twice as much space for preparing food. However, not all of us have the space or the money for it. If you have a smaller kitchen than there is a way for you to make your own island out of an old dresser.
You can use an old dresser that you have or purchase one for $30 at a thrift store or flea market. You might even be able to spend a bit less if you know how to work the price down. Before you begin think about what features you want it to have and how the finished product should like.
Cabinets
Every island needs to have some amount of cabinet space to it. Take out the two drawers on the bottom. The horizontal piece that was separating should be removed and cut into a vertical piece. This will divide the bottom area to create an equal amount of cabinet space.
Screw the piece into the right spot from above and below. Now measure the openings of the cabinet and cut the doors using the top of the dresser. If you want to keep the top of the dresser to be the countertop than you need to buy new cabinet doors. Measure the bottom of the cabinet and cut out a piece of ¼” plywood and staple it in place.
Purchase handles from your home improvement store. Make sure to measure and mark where the center of the cabinet doors are. Use a drill to make the holes and screw the handles into place.
Countertop
You can purchase pre-made countertops to use on the top. Purchase the wood plank countertop and screw it into place. After it is installed you can stain or paint it to the color of your choice. Make sure that the entire island is stained or painted and that it all works together.
