Remodeling Kitchen Islands

The kitchen is usually the first room in the house that we will look to change. It is not uncommon for people to spend thousands of dollars on new appliances, floors, and cabinets. However, not all of us have the ability to spend that kind of money at one time. Instead you can start small and remodel the kitchen island.

Before you can do anything you need to clean off the entire island. Use a mold detergent combined with warm water and a soft cloth. You need to get rid of any buildup of grease and dirt that has been caked on during the past week or month.

After you are finished take a step back and look closely at what you have. Try to think about the different ways that you can remodel it and change up the look of the kitchen without being too drastic. Ask yourself if it is big enough and if you actually like the counter space you have.

Sand down the wood surface to make it ready for refinishing. If you are wanting to stain it then use chemical strippers that will get rid of the old stain. The color of paint or shade of stain that you use is important. If you are only changing the look of the island than you don’t want to go so drastic as to make it look completely different from the rest of the kitchen. All of the cabinets, appliances, and countertops should look well together.

Before you can paint you need to add primer and allow it to dry a few hours. Make sure to apply at least two thin coats. When staining follow the directions of the brand you are using. Make sure that the windows are open for proper ventilation and you are wearing a protective mask.

If you have a granite, tile, or silestone countertop than you will need to either replace it or polish it. Replacing it should not be difficult or too expensive because you will not need but one or two pieces.

Replace or install light fixtures set above it. This additional lighting makes it easier for you to see when preparing food. Try to choose something that is more modern or will match the look of the kitchen.
