How To Design A Kitchen Island

There are many of us who enjoy to cook family meals – but find it difficult because we do not have the space for it. One of the best ways that you can fix this is to design a kitchen island. This is something that can be used in both large and small kitchens and for various purposes.

When designing a kitchen island there are a few things that you need to consider that include; what size it should be, what features it will have, and what style you can use so that it matches the kitchen.

Size

There are a variety of kitchen islands that can be used in both small and large areas. To know which ones you are able to use you first have to measure the size of your kitchen. Decide where you would like the island to be and measure three to four feet from the cabinets to this area. Most people prefer to place the kitchen island in the center of the kitchen – but you can also have it at the edge.

Features

In order to know what features it should have you must first decide how you wish to use it. Common features that you can install inside of them include; stovetops, dishwashers, cabinets, drawers, prep sink, main sink, and a place to store your wine. They can be as multi functional as you want them to be or they can be as simple as you want them to be. The more features that you want the more space you will need and the more money you will spend.

Style

The first thing that people will look at when walking into a kitchen is the island. Perhaps it is because it is in the enter of the room or because so many of us want one. Because of this you want to make sure that it has the style that will reflect the theme of the rest of the kitchen. For the base of the island it is best to use wood. The color of the wood needs to match with the cabinets.

The counter top of the island can match with the counter tops used in the rest of the kitchen – but we find it is better to use something different. To help it stand out and to give it a more modern style you should use something like marble or granite. If you want something more traditional and that will be more useful than it might be best to make them with wood or butcher block.

Test It Out

When trying to add a kitchen island into your existing kitchen you need to find a way to test it out to see if you really want it and if your kitchen can handle it. Cut out a piece of cardboard in the size that you want your island to be and lay it in the area that you want to put it in. walk around it and try to imagine what it would be like to have a full sized island. If you think that it would be in the way of your walkway or the other counter space then perhaps you should use a movable kitchen island or not install one at all.
