In many homes the children and parents are away from each other during the day and are separated by school and work. Meals are the time when they come together and talk about their days among other things. For families like this one of the best designs they can use when building a kitchen island is the family style.
This type of island is actually very basic when you compare it to the multi level or island bar design. In most cases these are built to be for very long and wide kitchens that have plenty of space in the center to build something that can fit large families and even friends. If you have a smaller family with only three or four people then it might be possible to build one in a medium sized kitchen.
The family style kitchen island design is basically a dining room table that is taller then most and sits in the center of the kitchen. It does not require the need for dramatic and expensive features like sinks, wine racks, or stovetops. When you design it the purpose in your mind is to make it wide enough to hold your family and their food while they eat.
On either side of the island you will need room to hold bar stools or high top chairs. These need to be tall enough to bring the person level with the table – but low enough to be pushed under the table when not being used. On either end of the island you can design cabinets where you can store dishes, pans, or decorative pieces.
Because it is a dining area you don’t want too many cabinets or drawers that will get in the way. It is possible though to build drawers on the long ends of the island where you can store place mats and coasters and silverware. These drawers can be long – but need to be well hidden so that they are not in the person’s way when sitting down.
Above it you should have one large ceiling light hanging down from the ceiling that will help to produce a soft glow during meal time. If the family style island is extremely long then you may want to put two smaller lights on either end.
The price for this type of island design will vary depending on how large you need it to be and the type of materials you use to make it. Most people prefer to use wood because of how durable it is and how easy it is to maintain.
