When designing a kitchen island we automatically assume that it would be easier and more affordable for us to purchase one that is already pre-made. While this might be easier for us it could cost us hundreds more dollars. We are essentially paying for the cost of labor that was used to make it.
The best way to stay on budget and save money is to build on yourself. First you need to measure the area in the kitchen you want it to be placed. Make sure that there is plenty of room all around it. Draw out the design you wish to use and make sure to include any special features you want to use.
Go to the home improvement store and choose two individual kitchen cabinets. This will usually cost between $150 to $250. The price will be dependent on the type of wood that you use and the quality of craftsmanship. The traditional size for an island is between thirty to thirty-six inches wide.
Put the two cabinets back to back against each other. Take out the drawers and open the doors. This will allow you to attach the two together on the inside. Drill six holes into the back and place one in each corner. There should be a total of four. The last two will be placed below the first ones. Place the screw bolts into each hole. On the opposite side put the washer and screw in the nut. Make sure that it is fastened tightly.
You should measure the top of the two cabinets again to make sure that it was done correctly. Each of them should have an inch all the way around to allow for an overhang. Take these measurements to the home improvement store and order the countertop. You need to tell them what ends needed to be rounded off or if it needs squared edges.
Most islands are built with laminate tops that will cost around $300. You could always save more money and install a piece of plywood with a cement back board. On top of the wood you can lay down tile or you can sand down the wood and seal it. Using tile takes longer – but it is easy to keep clean and looks great.
